The tapas tradition is the custom of gathering at 'tascas' (watering holes providing food) for a glass of sherry, wine or beer and sampling a range of different dishes amongst friends.
Now picture scores of Spaniards packed in a bar, heartily and heatedly engaging in conversation while at the same time drinking and eating: it is obvious the tapas atmosphere is far from sedate.
